What is a red light hat?

Healthy hair starts at the root.

Think of it as targeted red light therapy for your scalp, built into a cap you'll actually want to wear. Carefully positioned 650nm red light LEDs deliver light directly to the scalp to support healthy hair follicles, natural hair growth and scalp health, while the discreet, cordless design lets you continue with your day.

Wear it while you’re having breakfast, answering emails or winding down in the evening. No complicated setup - just a simple 10 minute ritual designed to fit naturally into your routine.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know.

What does the hat actually do?

The Baxter Blue Red Light Therapy Hat delivers targeted 650nm red light directly to the scalp, where healthy hair begins. Designed to support healthy hair follicles, natural hair growth and scalp health, it's a simple, non-invasive way to incorporate clinically studied red light therapy into your everyday routine.

It is a wellness device rather than a medical treatment and individual results may vary.

How often should I wear it?

Use the hat for 10 minutes per session 5-7 times per week, following the instructions provided with your device. Longer sessions are not necessarily better - the most important part is using it consistently.

Like most wellbeing routines, changes are gradual and will differ from person to person.

Is the Red Light Hat suitable for both men and women?

Yes - the Red Light Hat is designed with a unisex, adjustable fit that sits comfortably across different head shapes and hair types.

Does it work for thick, curly or coarse hair - does the light still reach the scalp?

Yes. Red light at 650nm is able to pass through hair to reach the scalp, and the cap's LED array is designed to make contact across most hair types. If your hair is particularly thick or heavily styled, parting sections before use can help the light reach the scalp more directly.

What is the tech in the cap?

The Baxter Blue Red Light Hat houses 120 high-powered LEDs delivering 650nm red light - the wavelength most consistently studied for hair - direct to the scalp. It runs on a magnetic, rechargeable battery that clicks into place for cordless sessions, and fits securely with an adjustable brass clip, all built into a regular baseball-cap design.

How does the clip-on battery work?

Charge the battery fully, then clip it securely onto the back of the hat. Press and hold the power button on top of the battery to turn the battery on, then press the play button to begin your session; the device will automatically switch off after 10 minutes.

The removable battery keeps the hat cordless and hands-free, so you are free to move around while you use it.

Where can I wear my Red Light Hat?

Anywhere that fits your day - around the house, in the car, on a walk. The cordless, magnetic battery means there's no cord to manage, so it moves with you rather than tying you to one spot.

Is red light therapy safe?

Red light therapy uses non-ionising light and does not expose your skin to ultraviolet light. When used according to the instructions, it is a gentle, non-invasive addition to your wellbeing routine.

Always follow the recommended session time. Speak with a healthcare professional before use if you have a medical condition, are sensitive to light or take medication that may cause photosensitivity. This adapts Baxter Blue’s existing approved safety language from the Face Mask page.

Can anyone use it?

The Red Light Therapy Hat is designed for adult use. Do not use it if you have a known sensitivity to light, and consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, taking photosensitising medication or managing an existing health condition.

Always read the supplied instructions before your first session.

Red light therapy for hair: What the research shows - Baxter Blue

Red Light 101

Red light therapy for hair: What the research shows

Does red light therapy actually work for hair? We went straight to the peer-reviewed research to find out, covering the mechanism, the wavelength, the results, how safe it is, and where the science is still catching up.
Read summary Hide summary

Red light therapy has quickly become one of the most talked-about tools for scalp health, and the research behind it is more substantial than most people realise. At 650nm, red light penetrates just far enough to reach the hair follicle, where it's absorbed by mitochondria and converted into cellular energy — a process linked to better circulation and reduced inflammation around the follicle. Multiple randomised, sham-controlled trials have measured real increases in hair density with consistent use, and a 2021 study using RNA sequencing found 650nm light specifically extended the active phase of the hair cycle. This piece lays out exactly what the peer-reviewed research shows, what it doesn't yet prove, and why wavelength and consistency matter more than most people think.

Red Light 101

How red light therapy for hair actually works

Red light reaches the scalp directly, working on the cellular processes tied to a healthy follicle environment. This piece walks through the mechanism step by step, plus practical tips for getting the most out of your sessions.

Most haircare sits on top of the hair — a shampoo, a serum, something you rinse out. Red light therapy works differently, reaching the scalp itself rather than the strand you can see. At 630–660nm, red light penetrates just 1–2mm into the skin — enough to reach the upper hair follicle, where it's absorbed by mitochondria and converted into ATP, the energy cells use to function and repair. Around the follicle, this is linked to increased circulation and reduced inflammation, both part of what keeps a follicle active and functioning well. This piece breaks down exactly what happens, step by step, plus practical tips for building it into a routine that actually sticks.

Red Light Therapy for Hair Loss: Does It Actually Work? - Baxter Blue

Red Light Therapy for Hair Loss: Does It Actually Work?

Red light therapy may support hair follicles by encouraging cellular energy, circulation and a healthier scalp environment. Research is most promising for early to moderate thinning, with results relying on regular use over several months rather than an overnight transformation.
Read summary Hide summary

Hair thinning can have many causes, from hereditary hair loss and hormonal changes to stress, nutritional deficiencies and scalp inflammation. Red light therapy uses targeted wavelengths of light to support cellular energy within the hair follicle, while also encouraging circulation and helping to calm inflammation around the scalp. Research is most encouraging for people experiencing early to moderate thinning, but consistency matters: visible changes generally take several months rather than a few sessions. It is best viewed as a non-invasive addition to a broader hair-health routine, alongside nutrition, scalp care and professional advice where hair loss is sudden or significant.
