Red light therapy works differently. It's aimed at the scalp itself, delivering light directly to the skin the hair grows out of, rather than the strand you can see. Here's what's actually happening when you put a red light hat on your head, and how to get the most out of it.

The science, in three steps

1. Light reaches the follicle. Red light in the 630–660nm range penetrates roughly 1–2mm into the scalp — enough to reach the upper hair follicle without the energy dispersing before it gets there. This is why wavelength matters: too short and it barely reaches the skin, too long and it passes through without being absorbed efficiently by the follicle.

2. Cells absorb it as energy. Inside each cell's mitochondria is an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase, which absorbs red light particularly well. When it does, it triggers an increase in ATP — the molecule cells use as fuel for repair and normal function.¹

3. The follicle environment responds. Around the follicle, this process is linked to increased local circulation and reduced inflammation — both part of what keeps a follicle active and functioning well.² A 2021 study using RNA sequencing on human hair follicles found that 650nm light specifically extended the active phase of the hair cycle in cultured follicle tissue, which is part of why 650nm shows up so consistently in this research.³

Why the scalp, not the strand

Once hair has grown out of the scalp, it's not living tissue anymore — nothing you apply to it changes what's happening at the root.
