Wellness Wednesday - How to successfully quit sugar

By Casey-Lee Lyons

Whether your goals are to increase your energy, find a healthy weight, get rid of sugar cravings or that 3pm energy slump and improve your skin or gut health, quitting sugar can have a positive impact on achieving these health goals. Naturopath and nutritionist Casey-Lee Lyons from Live Love Nourish shares with us how to successfully quit sugar with these simple and practical tips.

Using these simple strategies below that I share in the 8 Weeks To Healthy and Happy Online Program, you can successfully quit sugar and regain your vitality.

Quitting sugar is about embracing REAL FOOD; fresh, wholefood ingredients, minimal processed foods and eating as close to their natural state as possible. When you limit processed and packaged food refined sugar naturally begins to reduce in your diet. The key is to focus on eating real food.

Here are some of my tips to help you quit sugar and regain your energy:

  • Prepare yourself for success. Make sure your kitchen supports your goals by cleaning out your pantry and fridge of food that contain high amounts of added sugar. Restock your shelves with healthier swaps. Every time you open your pantry or fridge you want to feel inspired to make a healthy choice.
  • Stick to whole and fresh foods, as close to their natural state as possible.
  • Avoid foods with added sugar and refined ingredients (typically found in packaged and processed food). Such as refined sugar, lollies, confectionary, biscuits, baked goods, chocolate with added sugar, soft drinks, sugary drinks, energy drinks, iced tea, ice cream and others sweet food with added sugar.
  • Swap fruit juice for whole fruit (the whole fruit contains beneficial fibre as well as vitamins and minerals).
  • Check your labels and pay attention to hidden sugars. You will be surprised how much sugar is hiding in foods such as cereal, muesli bars, sauces and baked goods for example.
  • Identify unhealthy habits associated with sugar (like desserts whilst watching TV).
  • Avoid artificial sweeteners typically found in diet ‘sugar free’ foods and drinks. These can increase your appetite and trigger cravings and can impact your health.
  • If you currently have a lot of sugar in your diet, gradually start by reducing the amount of sugar in your diet each week.
  • Satisfy your sweet tooth with healthier options that are naturally sweetened or enjoy whole fruit. I love a medjool date with some nut butter for a sweet fix.
  • Set aside some time each weekend to do a little meal prep to get organised. Batch cook a meal or two, prepare some healthy snacks, chop some veggies ready to go etc so that you are prepared for the week ahead with your fridge packed with healthy choices.
  • Be kind to yourself. Take your time and don’t be too hard on yourself. It takes time but you are worth it.
  • Prioritise your health. You deserve to feel healthy and happy.

  • Try new sugar free recipes. For hundreds of healthy and sugar free recipes visit Live Love Nourish.

I hope these tips help and that they help you to accelerate towards your health goals.
